Although they have their peculiarities, we almost always think (wrongly) that, being physically, geographically or just visibly close to them, there won’t be much new there.

The city of Rio de Janeiro is full of them, some of them real cities like the “complexos” (favela complexes) or the largest favela in Brazil, Rocinha (which has almost 70,000 inhabitants – IBGE/2010 data. Community leaders speak of 165,000).

Trying to find out how the locals live and learn their stories, as well as the history of the community, is perhaps the biggest attraction for those who want to visit one of these spots in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Not to mention the views they offer, usually the most spectacular.

Below, we list 5 communities for you to visit when you are in Rio and want to get away from it all:

Chapéu Mangueira

Located on the slopes of Morro da Babilônia, they belong to an Environmental Protection Area (of Morros da Babilônia and São João). They are close to the beaches of Leme and Copacabana.

The graffiti wall at Ladeira Ary Barroso is one of the highlights of the entrance to the community, as is the Mirante da Babilônia.

There you can also walk along a luminous trail, which takes about 3 hours, and see ruins from the time of colonial Brazil.

For more information or to visit the communities, call CoopBabilônia: (21) 2295-6649 (Daise or Lucy – local guides).

Morro dos Prazeres

The hill is located in the Santa Teresa neighborhood, which in itself is a great attraction (here is an article we did about the neighborhood).

From the top of Prazeres you can see the Sugar Loaf, Guanabara Bay, the Flamengo landfill and the Central Station Tower.

Right there, at the entrance to the community, is the Casarão. This 1920’s building houses a cultural center with classes for children, youth and adolescents. Beyond, there is a variety of graffiti, including those by artist Marcio Swk (which can be seen in Santa Teresa and in some other parts of the city) and viewpoints such as Praça Doce Mel (overlooking Christ, the Rio-Niterói bridge and others) and the Campão (a society field overlooking other communities, Maracanã and Christ).

For more information or to visit Prazeres you can call the guide Carmen Givoni (21) 99104-7452 or contact the Santa Prazeres Tour staff.

Santa Marta

Located in the Botafogo neighborhood, it became world famous after hosting Michael Jackson, who filmed there the video clip of the song “They don’t care about us” in 1996. The community is home to the “Michael Jackson Slab”, with a mosaic by artist Romero Britto and a sculpture of the singer by artist Ique, undoubtedly one of the most photographed places in the area.

The name of the community refers to its patron saint, Santa Marta, whose image is located in a chapel on top of the hill.

Colorful houses, lookout points and handicraft stores are part of the tour of Santa Marta, which may include drumming lessons at the local samba school or a hike to the Dona Marta lookout point, which towers over the community and offers a postcard view of Sugarloaf and Guanabara Bay; areas of the northern part of the city and the Rio-Niterói bridge (on the other side of the lookout is a heliport from which you can see the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, part of the southern part, and Christ the Redeemer).

For more information or to visit Santa Marta you can call the local guide, Thiago Firmino, at (21) 9 9177-9459 or visit the website: http://favelasantamartatour.blogspot.com.br/.

The trail to Mirante Dona Marta with overnight stay is one of the distinctive services offered by Thiago Firmino, responsible for a well-known and very cool space in the community, the Lajão Cultural, where there are super parties.

Morro dos Cabritos/Tabajara

Located between the neighborhoods of Lagoa, Copacabana and Botafogo, they offer a privileged view of the city.

The summit of Morro dos Cabritos stands out (offering beautiful views), which can be reached by a 4-hour trail that requires a certain level of fitness.

For those who want something lighter, there is the Escadinha trail, which takes about 2 hours. The views are of Christ the Redeemer, Guanabara Bay and the cemetery of São João Batista.

For more information or to visit the community, call local guide Gilmar Lopes at (21) 9 9369-2844 or visit Tabritur’s Facebook page.

Vidigal

Next to Morro Dois Irmãos (the one shown in the sunset photos on Arpoador beach) and between the beaches of Leblon and São Conrado is Morro do Vidigal, one of the favelas that offers beautiful views of the south of the city. The favela is undergoing a clear process of gentrification.

The highlight is the Dois Irmãos hill trail, which takes about 4.30 hours. At the top there is a 360-degree view, one of the most beautiful views of the city.

For more information, visit https://trilhadoisirmaos.com.br/ or call (21) 99759-9023 and (21) 8394-4928.

Note: All the entrances to the communities mentioned in this post can be reached by public transport (bus or metro) + walking. In Morro Santa Marta there is an inclined plane (a kind of ramped elevator) to go up and down to certain points in the community; others offer a motorcycle cab service up to a certain point, but the most interesting thing is to get to know them on foot and with a reliable guide.

The ones mentioned in this post are included in the “Pocket Guide to Rio’s Communities”, launched in December by Sebrae.

Those who grew up in a big city or Brazilian metropolitan area may not be very interested in tourism in communities.
